One movie that won over the box office in 2001, to everyones surprise was The Princess Diaries which made a mindboggling $100 million. Viewers embraced Ann Hathaways character Mia who starts off as a clumsy ugly-duckling but ends up discovering shes a princess and transforming into an attractive teen with help from her doting grandmother Queen Clarisse (played by Julie Andrews). Noting the audiences warm reactions, the team of The Princess Diaries decided to come up with a sequel. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is the result.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement movie picks up the thread of Mias life close to six years on with her graduating from college in America and going back to Genovia. As she approaches her 21st birthday, grandma Clarisse decides its time to make the princess a Queen. Problems arise when Viscount Mabrey, played by Jonathan Rhys-Davies, starts asserting that his nephew is the next in line for the throne and the parliament decides to adhere to an old decree which forbids a Queen to take the throne without a husband.

Mias life becomes hectic as she struggles to cope with the many demands of the situation. She not only needs to find herself a consort within 30 days but must also escape the paparazzi and woo the countrys inhabitants. If that isnt enough, she also finds herself drawn towards Nicholas (Chris Pine) who is the evil Viscounts nephew trying to take over the throne. The perfect groom candidate is an Englishman, played by Callum Blue, who fails to make her heart beat like Nicholas, forcing her to consider her difficult choices between country and love.

Anna Hathaway effortlessly continues in her portrayal of Mia while Julie Andrews has the audience captured with her stunning appeal. Gary Marshall, the director and the original cast have worked hard and successfully created a light movie thats romantic with enough comedy to help you forget about everyday pressures and cares.

The movie will most definitely be enjoyed by women of all ages and young men as well, especially those with a romantic heart. Whether the gentlemen will be brave enough to admit they enjoyed the movie is a different story altogether. The princess is modern and independent in her thinking and miles away from the traditional damsel in distress kind of fairy tale character.
