Breakin’ 2 Electric Boogaloo is, pretty much, the all time greatest eighties movie. It has every last thing you could possibly want from an eighties flick. It’s got the wild, colorful fashion we associate with the era, it’s got that upbeat, party music hip hop soundtrack, it’s funny (back then, every movie was a comedy/whatever else), and the plot is so derivative of the era that it really becomes more archetypal. We follow Shabadoo and Boogaloo Shrimp basically playing themselves as a pair of dance instructors at the local community center. This community center provides a place for poor children from the urban setting to hang out and really just stay out of trouble, learning to dance, box, play sports and just make something of their lives rather than getting onto the wrong paths.

And of course, this being the eighties, you had basically three storylines to choose from: The drug dealers kill the hero’s family and he vows revenge, there’s an outbreak of monsters/Gremlins/Tribbles and they have to be contained, or the crooked land developers want to tear down a church/community center/neighborhood and build a golf course/shopping mall/landfill in its place.

So of course, the guys decide to put on a show to save the building. It’s a hair-thin clothesline of a plot, but it’s just enough to hang some really great dance numbers on. And these dance numbers… They’re some of the best ever put to film. It takes a little of the hip hop culture of the time, mixes that with the big choreographed dance numbers from classic musicals, and comes out with a really incredible hybrid that is incredibly exhilarating.

Shrimp has one of the movie’s best scenes dancing on the ceiling and walls of his bedroom. We’ve seen this trick before and we know that it’s done by putting the room on a spinning axis, but it’s really done well here. It’s shown in just a few, long, unbroken shots as he literally walks from floor to wall to ceiling all in one take. You can see out the window and look at the stationary trees, helping to maintain the illusion. Halfway through, his girlfriend walks in and literally stands upright as Shrimp is still spinning on the ceiling. Obviously, they used a harness and tied her hair down, but it shows just how far they went to make this scene work.

Shabadoo has the movie’s second best scene, when he and his friends have to confront a local street gang after push comes to shove. He chases them out under a bridge where he finally corners them and angrily rips off his vest, marches up to their leader and… Starts popping and locking. Yep, he settles a territory dispute with a dance off. It’s fun, it’s funny, and it’s got all the action of a fight scene without any of the unnecessary violence.

The movie does end happily, of course. Can you imagine such a fun movie having a downer ending?

Sunset Blvd was produced in 1950 and tells the tale of an aging Hollywood star and her lost youth and career.

The movie was directed by Billy Wilder also responsible for classic films like Some Like it Hot and it received three oscars. It takes its title name from the boulevard running through Beverley Hills in Los Angeles. An area synonymous with the rich and famous.

Desmond falls in love, but Joe is only using the relationship as a stopgap until the big time. He eventually gets tired of being a kept man and tried to leave, but Norma’s suicide attempt has him returning out of guilt.

Desmond believes that her career will flourish again, but she is more mature in years now and the film company has no interest in her script.

In secret Joe works on a script with a younger writer Betty and the two of them fall in love. He is determined to leave Norma, but she fires a shot and he falls dead into the swimming pool at her lavish mansion.

The famous line arrives at the end with Desmond weaving down the steps and saying; “I’m ready for my close up” sealing her fate and showing how mentally unstable she has become.

The movie is pretty tragic and its themes of aging, greed and fame are still very significant today. The film has a timeless quality and has relevant themes that many people will relate to.

Alfred Hitchcock is typically remembered as the master of suspense, but in truth, he pioneered just about everything that would eventually become modern cinema. In Psycho, he invented the slasher film. With North by Northwest, he created the notion of the all-action film. While the film has the same sort of twisty-turny plot that we associate with the master, it is defined by its incredible action set pieces.

Everyone has seen the whole airplane chase, or at least a spoof of it, and while that’s truly an incredible scene, it’s only one incredible scene out of several. You rarely see referenced the shootout on the face of Mount Rushmore, nor do you see referenced one of the most inventive car chases ever, wherein Cary Grant has been fed an entire bottle of whiskey and is now being forced to flee the baddies in a car with no brakes.

Modern action films rarely show this much imagination. There are a few exceptions, the Crank films, some of the work of the Hong Kong masters of action, but after seeing Cary Grant in a drunken car chase, it’s hard to get excited at a muscle car running through a fruit stand for the millionth time, or the hero running amok with a machine gun in either hand.

Context. The main thing this film has is context. Where most action movies will take a hero and some baddies, give them all guns, and call it a day, Hitchcock’s hero is not only in a car chase, he’s in a car chase drunk, with no brakes. When he gets into the crops to escape the plane, it covers the crops with pesticide.

Hitch was the master of suspense, but he was also the master of putting his heroes in over their heads, and that’s how the action in this film works so well. It’s never enough for one problem to exist, but Cary Grant could never solve a problem without creating another one. This just plain made for better action.

It’s too bad that most people who make action films these days have copied Hitchcock’s tropes and turned it into a formula, rather than actually looking at how and why it worked and tried making their own stories from there, coming up with new and fresher ideas.

This film, in addition to some of the greatest action scenes in the history of cinema, also has one of the most explicit love scenes: A train going into a tunnel as the hero embraces the leading lady. It’s as direct a metaphor as you could ask for. In fact, Hitchcock couldn’t understand the appeal of the X rated films of the seventies since the idea of explicit sex scenes was old news to him!

If you haven’t yet, see it. It remains startlingly relevant and exciting all these years later, and makes a perfect antidote to the big budget blockbusters that have the scale and scope of North by Northwest, but not the style.

Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back is, perhaps, one of the greatest science fiction movies ever made. The movie has something for everyone. Love, revenge, drama, and mystique. For people that need somewhere safe to retreat to when the world gets too hard to deal with, don’t forget about episode five.

There are many reasons this is such a great movie. The viewer is treated to seeing the underdogs, the people on the run, the people that are being hunted. Being hunted is a strange thing, and it creates a sort of drama that simply can’t be recreated anywhere else.

Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a movie if they just hung out on some random planet the whole time, so they are found pretty quickly. The battle that ensures is a spectacular battle. The rebels are so over powered that there whole strategy is simply to try to keep the Empire out of the base long enough to evacuate it. The rebellion is still pretty small at this point, so running away is really the only answer. When the viewer sees how much of a ragtag group the rebels are and how hard they have to fight just to try to stay a step ahead of the Empire, it is easy to see that the rebellion is still just a pipe dream. At this point it seems like there is no way these people can win against such an overwhelming force.

They do escape, barely. Luke splits ways to go visit Yoda, who is supposed to train him in the ways of the force. This training with Yoda shows just how far away Luke is from being the hero that it seems he will eventually become. He is just a kid, trying to do something that is a lot bigger than him. And maybe, just maybe, he isn’t really up to the challenge.

While Luke is learning he may not have what it takes to be a Jedi, the rest of the gang is still trying to get away from the Empire. A faulty hyper-drive has left them stuck on the run, and they can’t just jump away like everyone else was able to do. So they are in constant peril, always just barely ahead of the Empire who is hot on their tales.

Eventually all the characters end up on Cloud City. Luke fights Darth Vader and learns that Vader is his father. But he doesn’t win that fight. Instead, he escapes, barely, from Vader and gets on the Falcon with everyone but Han, who has been taken away by Boba Fett.

The whole movie is about a handful of people on the run from a huge organization. This is why it works so well and why it has lasted as such an iconic movie for so long. This is the quintessential underdog story. The group that has no move but to be on the run.

Smaller groups pull of a somewhat large military strike, and then immediately have to escape and evade, sometimes for years, as the people they just pissed off are coming after them. The stories that usually aren’t told are the stories of the people who are on the run. There is great drama to be found in running away.

Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back hits a very emotional note. And by the end, there is really nothing to tell us that everything is going to be okay. There is no way to know what will become of Han or the rebellion. But there is a glimpse, at the end of the movie, of the fleet of ships the rebels have collected. For the first time it seems that, perhaps, they might just have a chance of winning, if there truly are that many people that are fighting back against the Empire. But everyone seems to lose in this movie. The good guys have to stay in hiding, the bad guys don’t capture the people they wanted. No one gets what they want. And sometimes isn’t that just how life is?
