Boaz Yakin is typically seen as a work-for-hire writer and director. It’s not his fault, he’s just a good writer with bills to pay, so he takes a lot of sub-par studio projects that don’t really offer him anything interesting to do in the script. So it’s weird that a movie like Fresh comes from someone with a track record for mediocrity, but Fresh really is one of the all time must see movie downloads.

This movie came after Boaz Yakin’s self imposed exile. At a certain point, he became disillusioned with the film industry and declared that he would be taking a hiatus from writing, at least until he felt he had something important to say. The result was a movie that truly does make a powerful statement.

Fresh is the name of the young hero of the movie, a child who works as a drug mule for various dealers and scumbags around the city. He makes around twenty to fifty bucks per run, and saves it all up in a coffee can while his dealers have assumed he’s been spending it on comic books and candy bars. What exactly is he saving it for? Well, you’ll find out, and you’ll be honestly shocked and surprised at exactly how deep his plans really go.

Each week, Fresh spends one afternoon playing chess with his father who offers him guidance and a moment to reflect upon what’s going on in his life. These are sort of the Greek chorus scenes of the film, allowing both Fresh and the audience to consider what has happened before and where the movie is going to go from here. The chess also serves as a metaphor for what Fresh is doing while on the clock.

The movie is sort of like Fistful of Dollars as a hood story. Two of Fresh’s friends are killed by one of the dealers he works for, and he takes it upon himself to exact an incredible revenge plan that gives you one surprise after another. Fresh is a young man of incredible intelligence, and his scheme is one of the all time greatest plots in film history.

The plan is complex, but easy to understand after you see the whole thing play out. Fresh’s ingenuity is incredible, the way he plays one side against the other, all the while avoiding suspicion simply by virtue of being a child. They never suspect that they’ve been outwitted by a ten year old. So the question is how long he can keep the facade going, how long it takes to make everything work and free himself of these scumbag’s control over his life once and for all.

The movie is, at times, brutally and shockingly violent. This is necessary to drive home the reality of Fresh’s situation. He’s not in a good place in life, his bosses menace him and threaten him with death at every turn, and he walks a tightrope in order to keep himself alive while at the same time taking down the people who torment him and his friends and family.

It’s a rare film that works this well with such touchy subject material. The film takes a child of ten years old and puts him into a Fistful of Dollars/Yojimbo style plot, scheming and plotting his way to victory over deadly, menacing criminals. It’s incredible how delicate an operation this is, to make the movie exciting and suspenseful without selling short the reality and truth of the subject matter of real life street violence.

The show includes a lot of hilarious characters, like her supplier, a saucy old black woman in low rent housing who runs a family of her own with her street dealers, and The Candyman, a woman who seems based on that “Stop the Insanity!” fitness guru. She runs a bakery, and refuses to sell to any customers who don’t promise to work out to burn off the fat they get from her excellent brownies, cakes and cupcakes.

As you watch this suburban mom try to keep control of her situation, you’ll find yourself rooting for her to really succeed with her marijuana dealership just as much as you’ll be rooting for her to maintain her family situation. Think Roseanne meets Sopranos meets Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and that’s almost, but not quite, what the show’s all about.

The show is quite addictive, of course. It’s structured as such that each episode is only a chapter and each season is really a self contained story, so download a full season at a time and be ready to spend several hours a night catching up on what happens next. It’s definitely a strange journey full of unforgettable images, for better or for worse. The movie might be right up your alley, or it may leaving you simply scratching your head, but it’s not an experience you’ll forget any time soon.

This is the movie people point to when they talk about Japanese cyberpunk, which has always been more focused on the imagery of industrial machinery, steam, sparks and electricity than on the relations between man and computers. If you want to see more of this genre, you should also check out Electric Dragon 80000v and Burst City, which are considered two classics in this genre.

The movie is incredibly fast paced, and it’s even a little confusing, but that’s sort of the point. It almost has a documentary like feel with the gritty look of the film and the spontaneous nature of the script. It is as close as you can get to the “found footage” feel without gimmicks like hand held cameras.

The film is part of an unofficial trilogy of sorts with The Searchers and Paris, Texas. Both Scorsese’s film and Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas are loose remakes of John Ford’s The Searchers, and both of the main characters of the latter films, both named Travis, are loosely cast as John Wayne types. The whole trilogy works as an example of just how many different ways there are to tell a single story.

The Searchers is an adventure film rotating around the themes of racism and lonesomeness. Paris, Texas takes a similar story and tells it in a sweet way, focusing on issues of lonesomeness and family, and Scorsese focuses on lonesomeness and the use of violence as a means of personal validation. In all three, the heroes serve as escorts, attempting to rescue people and put them where they need to be, reuniting them with their families, but in all three, the heroes must leave once more in the end, forever alone.

Each of these films is its own statement on the nature of loneliness, and it’s because of this that the heroes are all so easy to sympathize with. What Travis Bickle does in the film is certainly not something most of us would ever take part in, but you find yourself wanting him to come out okay, nevertheless, simply because we all know that lonesomeness, that need for validation.

Everyone has been at a point in their lives where they feel trapped in their own little bubble. Loneliness doesn’t just mean being alone, being single or living out in the middle of nowhere. Loneliness can happen even when you’re surrounded by people all day. We know where Travis has been.

What many people don’t talk about in regards to this film really is that there’s a part of you that roots for Travis, even as he commits serious acts of violence at the end. We wish that we could cast the film as a simple cowboys and Indians tale of right and wrong. The tragedy is that it’s just not that simple.

While the film serves as part of a trilogy to The Searchers and Paris, Texas, it’s also something of a companion piece to First Blood, another film about a lonely Vietnam veteran who uses violence as a means of personal validation.
