The 1995 film, The Usual Suspects was written by Christopher McQuarrie. It is a classic mystery film, complete with high crime, murder and suspense, with a few good twists that truly make this film not only memorable, but a good watch–particularly the first time around.

This man is Roger “Verbal” Kint, a disabled man with cerebral palsy is played by Kevin Spacey.

Part of the ensemble that orchestrated the crime, the disabled Roger Kint is questioned harshly by a Special Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri).

Roger Kint’s retelling of the implicating previous events in addition to the testimony of an injured Hungarian criminal hospitalized after the ship incident, allow Kujan to piece together the truth of the whole ordeal. Through this he discovers the existence of the infamous yet anonymous Kesyer Soze.

Whether Keyser Soze even exists is a mystery to Kujan and whether or not he finds the mythical mastermind depends solely on Verbal Kint’s testimony.

An intellectual suspense movie, The Usual Suspects will leave you trying to keep up. Rolling Stone magazine stated that Kevin Spacey’s performance was Oscar worthy and most critics agreed; as Roger Kint, he was organic and captivating.

Despite a terrible review from Roger Ebert and averaged moderate reviews, this film was well received by film festivals. It was also nominated for Academy Awards in the following categories: Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay. Unleashed, or as it was known in every country besides the United States, Danny the Dog, was one of Jet Li’s last kung fu movies and one of his best made in the English language. The film is all about the concepts of family, personal freedom and dignity, and it really completely invents its own style of martial arts from the ground up. The movie follows Danny, Danny the Dog, a young man who has been raised since childhood as an attack dog by Uncle Bart, a low rent loan shark and gangster, played to the sleaziest extremes by Bob Hoskins. Danny escapes his boss and winds up in the home of a kindly old piano maintenance man played by none other than Morgan Freeman. Freeman and his daughter take it upon themselves to teach Danny what love and family are really all about, far different from the kind of family Danny had with his Uncle Bart.

There is a lot of familiar territory here, it’s an old story: A dog runs from a cruel family and winds up in the home of a kind family. However, by replacing the dog with a young man, producer Luc Besson has stumbled upon a very clever twist. This lends a lot of extra mileage to a story that could feel stale and tired in a less talented story teller’s hands.

The action in this film is really something. Danny doesn’t do kung fu, he attacks like a rabid dog. It’s more fitting to his character, of course, and it’s an incredible thing to see in action. He bites and scratches, he pulls hair, he just goes wild against his opponents, and it creates a very unique and bizarre fighting style that, of course, would probably be quite ineffective in real life, but is one of those styles like Jackie Chan’s take on drunken boxing that has a lot of personality and expresses the character better than the dialog does.

The movie is ultimately an action flick, and Jet Li beats everyone up and they all live happily ever after and so on and so forth, but there’s a surprising amount of emotional depth and complexity here, as well as some surprisingly great action scenes. The Die Hard movies are prime examples of action in the eighties and nineties. They capture the humor and the craziness of action movies while not sacrifices some seriously good action scenes. The newest movie in the franchise was, for many people, a bit of a disappointment. That is, most likely, because it went a little bit too much over the top.

The first of the movies has John going against a charmingly evil Alan Rickman in a building in downtown LA. He tries to get help the whole time, and it is easy to see that he is just a man who doesn’t really want to be where he is and is trying to get someone else to come over and help him out the whole time. Eventually he just has to do it himself, but he tries to get help. And that is important to his character.

The second movie gets more outlandish. It takes place in an airport and once again our hero is thrown into something just because he happened to be in the right place at the right time. The premise works, and he is able to save the day, but there are a few more elements of the completely far-fetched that start to pop up. Still, the movie isn’t outside the realm of possibility by too much.

The third movie does a good job of being really over the top. There is a lot that is happening in the movie, and John is caught in the middle, although this time because the bad guy calls him out personally. Still, the movie is a good balance of humor and action and wasn’t so over the top on action as to be ridiculous.

But the forth movie ends up having an entire nation at siege. And it doesn’t make a lot of sense how that happens. What makes less sense is that this cop from New York suddenly seems to have super powers. Yes, he seemed nearly indestructible in the first three movies, but now he is able to jump out of a moving car that he has just turned into a rocket to destroy a helicopter and get up and walk away.

These movies work best when they are done a little smaller. Why not have John go up against a small group of determined individuals on smaller scale? Why not let him fight by hiding in the air ducts and sneaking around with a stolen assault rifle? This is why people fell in love with the series, not just the over the top nature of them.

The biggest difference in the movies is the difference in the way movies are being made. Super hero movies have upped the ante on action, and special effects have gotten a lot better. It isn’t that the filmmakers can’t make a good Die Hard movie, it is simply that they are able to make a movie that is more about the flashy effects than about the basic idea of one man taking on a larger group of baddies.

Die Hard is a great franchise. If it ends now, then it will always be remembered that way. But as filmmaking keeps getting bigger and bigger, it is going to turn into a movie that is about John McClain taking on an entire country while flying through the air on a jet pack. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the third in the trilogy, is considered by some to be the least of the trilogy, and by others to be the best. While the films were produced only a few years apart, you definitely feel the distance in time within the story’s world. Max has grown his hair long, and his old leather police uniform certainly shows the wear and tear of time.

The heart of the action takes place in Bartertown, the last outpost of humanity in the Outback, where Auntie Entity rules with an iron fist. Interestingly, while she’s cast in the role of villain, she’s much more than just a movie bad guy. She’s a pragmatic, ruthless leader, and wants only to see humanity through these hard times, even at the expense of a few lives.

Max eventually must escort a small society of children through the Outback, through Bartertown, and “Beyond Thunderdome” to “Tomorrow-Morrow Land”, which is, in fact, what is left of Sydney, Australia.

Watching Max take them on this perilous journey through the Outback, through Bartertown, and eventually “Beyond Thunderdome” is really an exhilarating, epic adventure, and while many hardcore fans prefer The Road Warrior, Thunderdome is, without a doubt, well worthy of the rest of the trilogy, and many consider it to be the very best of the series.
