IC Places Instant Movie Review – Valkyrie

About the movie: At the height of WW2, a group of high-ranking German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and seize power of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was codenamed "Valkyrie", for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. This plan had been modified by the conspirators to ensure their success, but for various reasons the plot failed when finally carried out on 20 July 1944. In an alternate 1985 America, costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" – which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity…but who is watching the watchmen? Distributed by Tubemogul.

As might be expected, the market is suddenly being flooded with Barack Obama books, bio-pics and bric-a-brac. This DVD is an uncritical vanity piece which essentially retraces his historic rise to the presidency, as recounted by a combination of news footage and entertaining interviews with some familiar talking heads.

Among the luminaries making appearances here are CNN's political consultant Roland Martin, Harvard Professor Laurence Tribe, comedian George Lopez, Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Harvard attorney-turned-actor Hill Harper. Lopez talks about how Latinos initially resisted Barack before taking the Kool Aid, while Harper reflects on his former classmate's prowess on the basketball court. Distributed by Tubemogul.

THE DEAL – British director Stephen Frears' political docudrama The Deal was originally broadcast on Channel 4. The film is based on the real-life events that elevated Tony Blair to the seat of Prime Minister. The film shows how the hard-working, but not head-turning, Gordon Brown (David Morrissey) and the flashy Blair (Michael Sheen), two very opposite personalities, forged a working relationship while opposing Margaret Thatcher's government. When the Labor leader, John Smith, dies of a heart attack, on May 13, 1994, everyone believes Brown will ascend to the top of the party. But that isn't what happens. The film supposes what happened at a historic dinner meeting between Brown and Blair, at Islington, that led directly to Blair's appointment. This film is loosely based on The Rivals, written by James Naughtie.
