Learning to read music can be challenging at first, but there are a few key things to remember that will help make it easier for you. There are three main elements of music that will be indicated on written music in different ways. These elements are rhythm, melody, and harmony. When you learn how to read music, it is important that you practice as often as possible. You should also try to play with other musicians to make sure that you are putting your learning into context.

The most fundamental element of music is rhythm. Rhythm will be indicated on the music notation as by the different types of notes. Notes of different lengths are whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, thirty second notes and so on.

Melody, as opposed to rhythm, is all about pitch. Melody will be indicated by the vertical position of the notes on the staff (the five lines on top of each other that you see on standard music notation).

Harmony is a little more complex of an idea. Harmony relates to the idea of playing more than one note at the same time. When you play two or more notes together, you will hear a harmony between the notes. Some harmony is consonant and pleasant sounding, while other harmony can be very dissonant.

Just like learning to play an instrument, when you are learning to read music, you should try to practice a lot. If you put some time into reading music every day, you will certainly see an improvement. It is best to practice reading music by playing things that are unfamiliar. This is known as sight reading.

When practicing reading music, you can only get so far by yourself. In order to truly read music well, you need to be able to read music in a context of playing along with other musicians. If you can keep up with a group, then you can consider yourself an apt music reader.
