So if you haven’t seen it yet, Tropic Thunder was, surprisingly, one of the funniest films of the year. This may come as a surprise, as it does star Ben Stiller, and he’s been phoning it in with lazy efforts lately. However, this is what Stiller is capable of as a writer and director, and not just another of his “star power for hire” unfunny comedy flicks. Next time you want to watch movies online, give Tropic Thunder a try and see whether or not it lives up to Stiller’s funnier efforts for you.

The movie serves as an excellent satire of modern day Hollywood culture. Before the movie begins, we’re treated to a series of fake commercials which provide some of the biggest laughs of the movie. We see a few trailers for movies starring the characters in the film, who are, after all, film actors. Jack Black starring as a series of fat-suited people sitting around a table farting is a perfect spoof on everything Eddie Murphy has been up to lately.

The movie follows these actors as they are put into a situation that is far beyond their control, mixing elements of action films, comedy and drama all in once. They believe that they’re out in the jungle for some hardcore training for the movie they’re making, but it quickly becomes clear that they’re in a do or die situation.

The theme of the film is one of honesty, the movie is about phoniness and sincerity, and all of the characters have to come to terms with who they are in life. While it’s a comedy, you find yourself actually rooting for these characters to see things through, to succeed in their internal struggles and find out who they are and their place in the universe.

It’s a very funny film, too, of course, but it’s also a moving and dramatic film, as well as an exciting one. The movie is really more than you’d expect from Ben Stiller these days, who seems content to just collect big paychecks for big budget movies with low mileage jokes. This one is actually one of his very best, though.

What makes these action scenes interesting is the fact that, when the characters finally come face to face with the badguys, they’re not carrying real guns, but prop automatic rifles, so they’re only firing blanks while the other side of the gunfight is firing live rounds. This provides a whole new dynamic to the concept of the movie shootout unlike anything we’ve ever seen in an action flick before.

Be on the lookout for one of the greatest cameos of all time, and don’t look at the cast listing on imdb until you’ve figured it out for yourself. When he first appears, you’ll be thinking “That guy looks familiar, who is that?” Then you’ll wind up saying to yourself “Could it be? Nah, that’s not… Wait a minute! I KNOW WHO THAT IS!” Figuring out the cameo is the biggest laugh of the movie, really.

If you want a movie with a lot of laughs, a lot of action, and its heart in the right place, Tropic Thunder is one of the better films out there today in that regard, and it’s definitely worth a try if you’d like to see Ben Stiller prove to the world that he can still be pretty funny, when he wants to be, that is.
