In 1962, Lawrence of Arabia was released to overwhelming praise. This film portrayed the World War I experiences of British officer T. E. Lawrence during his time with the Arab Rebellion. The movie won 7 Oscars, including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Score, and Best Cinematography. It is considered by many to be one of the greatest movies of all time.

Borrowing a page from Citizen Kane, the movie opens with Lawrence’s death in 1935. He was killed while riding a motorcycle near his home when he swerved to miss two boys on bicycles. Reporters at his funeral services try in vain to glean some understanding of the man from those who knew him best. The action then shifts to World War I Cairo. Lieutenant Lawrence is dispatched to ascertain what chance Prince Faisal appears to have in his rebellion against the Turks. In a meeting with Faisal, Lawrence recommends a daring attack on Aqaba. From that point on, Lawrence finds himself firmly entrenched in the Arab Rebellion, even when it puts him at odds with his native land. During the course of the war, he discovers aspects of his personality that disturb him, such as a certain enjoyment of killing.

Most of the main roles were ultimately awarded to actors who were not initially chosen. Peter O’Toole plays the lead, but Marlon Brando and Albert Finney both turned the part down first. Alec Guinness was not cast as Prince Faisal until Laurence Olivier dropped out. David Lean, who directed, had to convince Sam Spiegel, the producer, to cast Jack Hawkins as General Allenby. Spiegel wanted to sign Cary Grant in the role. Omar Sharif was eventually cast as Sherif Ali, but only after Alain Delon and Horst Buchholz rejected it. Filming had actually begun with Edmond O’Brien playing Jackson Bentley, the American reporter. When O’Brien fell ill, Arthur Kennedy was cast to replace him. Anthony Quinn, Jose Ferrer, and Claude Rains, who played Auda abu Tayi, the Turkish Bey, and Mr. Dryden respectively, however, were the first choices.

Other characters besides Lawrence were actual participants in the war. Among these were Auda abu Tayi, Prince Faisal, and Generals Allenby and Murray. Lawrence’s servants and the man who charged into the Turkish lines at Tafas existed. Gasim, the Arab Lawrence rescued and then had to execute was also real.

Many characters were drawn from several different people. Sherif Ali was fictional but believed to be largely based on a cousin of Prince Faisal. Colonel Stewart Newcombe seems to be the inspiration for Colonel Brighton. Lowell Thomas obviously served as the model for Jackson Bentley, the American newsman.

As often happens when art interprets life, some points were inaccurate, such as the weakness of the Arab Council. Nor did the Arab army desert Lawrence as the screenplay depicts. Bentley, in an incident that occurred in late 1917, states that America had not joined the war when it had, historically.

How accurately the film reflects the character of T. E. Lawrence has been debated since the film was released. Some hold the position that he was an egotist, while others state that the facts do not bear this out. Others debate whether Lawrence was a masochist and whether he was asexual or homosexual. Two of the most vocal critics have been Lawrence’s brother and reporter Lowell Thomas. The arguments, however, have failed to detract from the film’s popularity.

Moss is terrified of being caught by the wrong people with the money, and so he wisely rents two rooms at a motel in the area. It isn’t long before Mexicans seeking the money find the first room that he rented.

He decides it is best to go to the second room that he has rented. The transmitter allows Anton to know that the money is in the motel in question and he heads into the first room of Llewelyn, to find three Mexicans inside which he kills. He does not find the money, because Llewelyn has hidden it in the air duct and escaped with it.

There are several encounters between the two, injuring each other and building up the film. More characters are introduced and many are removed from the story. No one is safe from the carnage of the film, and to save the ending, this synopsis will go without saying where the money actually winds up.

The movie would not have been quite this powerful if it weren’t for the impressive performances by Josh Brolin (Moss), Javier Bardem (Chigurh), and Tommy Lee Jones (Sheriff Ed Tom). Without these performances, the movie likely would not have been as highly acclaimed as it became.

There are certainly several different things to know and to consider about this movie. If you have not seen “No Country For Old Men”, than many “Best of…” lists will likely tell you that you should. Jefferson holds certain ideals of American politics that makes him a bit of an optimistic and extremely patriotic. He is a proud follower of the tenets of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. He looks up to these men and hopes to carry on the same tenacity for virtue within the White House.

Almost everyone around Jefferson was in on the plan. They all knew exactly why he was there. Others resented such a simple man that seem to bumble his way through speeches, being there. Jefferson also felt out of place but he had no idea how he was being used. Their plan seemed to be working until Jefferson realized he was a pawn in their corrupt game of politics. Then he became a problem that none of them saw coming.

When Jefferson finds out about the corruption taking place within the Senate he immediately takes a stand and fights to restore the integrity of Senate. He is able to defeat his enemies in the Senate that were scheming against him. They took him for a small town simpleton and had no idea of the tenacity he possessed to fight against them. He devises a plan to be heard that ultimately brings down his corrupt adversaries.

He starts a filibuster on the State floor and exposes the American public to the illegal dealings within the Senate. This leads to the termination of the guilty parties. He is then applauded as a great American hero; proving that the American people still value virtue and honesty within their government.

Although this is a well known and widely received film, it did have its critics. American politicians took offense to the portrayal of Senators being men you could not trust. Several others took fault with how the movie represented America to foreign Nations. There were several countries that actually banned the film.

Even if you’re not the biggest fan of Nora Ephron and her dating comedies, My Blue Heaven is really something special, and certainly one of the must download movies of the era. Steve Martin really knocks it out of the park here, and Nora Ephron goes above and beyond to prove that she can actually still be incredibly funny when she really wants to be.

Steve Martin and Rick Moranis star as, respectively, a member of the Italian mafia, and the FBI agent assigned to protect him until he can testify. Martin is shipped to a picturesque small town and, yes, it’s just another fish out of water movie, but it’s very well done this time, very funny, and when it comes down to it, an old, cliche story is fine so long as it’s done properly.

The movie is funny, and that’s what it really comes down to in a comedy. Steve Martin is really at his best here, as is Moranis, and even some jokes that should, by all rights, fall flat, wind up providing some of the biggest laughs of the film. It’s your standard odd couple story, Martin is morally ambiguous, Moranis is uptight, but it works well, these two skilled actors make it feel fresh and new.

Martin quickly takes over the little town he’s been sent to and starts his own thing. He meets a few other protected witnesses, they decide that they’re not getting enough from the government, and they start hijacking trucks and forming their own little mini-mafia in their friendly little town. Watching these old goombas take the town over is really delightful, watching Steve Martin talk his way out of trouble is even better.

The movie does get directly involved in some violent stuff later on, but it never gets ugly, it’s always funny and never unpleasant.

Another big source of laughs is in watching Martin effortlessly juggle his two girlfriends and wife. Somehow, these three women never find out about each other, and there’s a suspicion that, if they did, he would find a way to talk his way out of it, like always. Martin’s character is a crook, but such a likable, friendly crook, he could steal your wallet and your heart at the same time.

The movie has a great, dreamy look to it, with focus on blue skies and green pastures. This captures that quaint, American landscape that the film is all about, providing a sharp contrast to the gritty, urban environment that Martin’s character grew up at the heart of.

The movie might not be one of the greatest films ever made, but it’s somewhere in Steve Martin’s top ten, and certainly one of Nora Ephron’s best. At the very least, it beats watching just another dating comedy from the writer.
